Stage 1 - Munich to Wasserburg Am Inn 65km (01-May-2019)

The excitement of starting a new tour is still a big thrill and today was no different as Munich turned on a clear blue sky, sunny with a pleasant chill factor. Happy days indeed. I would like to dedicate this ride to my good mate Kevin Ellwood and his lovely wife Melvita. It was his idea to do the tour but instead he is rightly home looking after his darling Mel who has a medical condition.
Like I said, Munich certainly put on the weather for me today for the start of my tour. The weather was miserable during my 3 day stay, battleship grey skies, constant rain or drizzle and cold to boot, still I made the most of it. It’s a lovely city with friendly folks and lots to see and do and heaven for cyclists, foodies and beer drinkers.
Left Munich at around 8am, the streets were deserted due to it being a public holiday. The route designed by Ellwood was mostly on mostly flat bike paths in quiet residential areas through Munich and small farms on the outskirts. It can’t be helped, but one always bumps into an Aussie; a sheila from Manly of all places, visiting Europe to celebrate 30 years of happy marriage. They were kind enough to take this mug shot of mine.

The ride was quite eventful, apart from me coming off my bike (through carelessness); bruised elbow, knees and pride. Thankfully the bike came off much better than I. The folks in a couple of villages I rode through were celebrating a festival called May Tree (English translation) on May 1, a tradition going back god knows how many years  which is basically putting up a man made tree in a village which is basically( I reckon) an excuse to drink beer and get pissed and play dress ups which they surely do; men wearing leather hosens and women, dirndls.

I finally rode into Wasserburg going down a steep hill and much to my surprise, my hosts in the guest house accommodation for the night are a couple of Indians from Punjab. They were as pleased to see me as I them. Nice people.
Went for a stroll through the cute village; lots of people eating and drinking and having fun as they do in Bavaria. Do you know per mill, beer is cheaper than water or soft drinks. Shame I am a teetotaler. Really liked the village.
For dinner, I had Indian of course cooked and served by my hosts, one of the best Lamb Saag and Chicken Korma curries I have had; all for 10 Euros. They know how to look after a brother, I guess. It’s amazing how Indians go to all corners of the world, but Wasserburg, well I never.
I also spent a lot of time with Samsung support to try and fix why my photos are fixed but to no avail. Less said about that the better.
End of a very happy first day and now I have to end this blog and get ready to watch my beloved Liverpool which I did. Played really well but still lost. It would have been icing on the cake if they had won but never mind, it's still been a beautiful day.

Stage 3 - Seeon Seebrook to Salzburg - 60km (03-May-2019)

It’s wet and cold; at home, neither would I go for a ride nor play golf in these conditions but here, I have to soldier on.  And soldier on, I did, on near perfect bike paths most of the way, sometime through the countryside, sometime parallel to the B roads as I made way towards Salzburg. Not many photo taking opportunities until I got to Traunstein, where the town square was alive with market vendors and town folks. There was an orderly queue outside one of the stalls selling fresh Spargle (Asparagus), a seasonal delicacy, which I am partial to as well. I got talking to a lady there as you do; who was kind enough to tell me more about the town’s history and why she believed it was god’s own place for her and offered to take this mug shot of mine for prosperity to remember her beloved town. Got lost trying to get out of town; my Garmin doesn’t acknowledge road works which was blocking my route so ended up asking another young lady on how I could cross...

Stage 9 – Bad Gastein to Villach 95km (18-May-2015)

A long day in the saddle today; bitterly cold with a constant drizzle that only Europe can serve up. Not quite what I had in mind on my birthday but worth it all the same. That old adage, what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger…. you learn a lot about yourself on days like this. I was the first one at breakfast, stuck to my routine of making sandwiches to take with me along with some snacks, and then have a leisurely breakfast. First up was a 5km ride to Böckstein, in bitterly cold weather, all uphill of course to grab the train that takes cars, motorbikes and bicycles through the Tauern tunnel to Mallnitz; departs 20 past the hour. Took the opportunity to get take some photos and one taken off me at the station. On arrival at Mallnitz, it’s all downhill, starting with a steep descent of approximately 500m through a long and winding road; hope these 2 photos capture the scenery which was quite breathtaking as most of Austria is.  By the time I got ...

Stage 11 – Kranjska Gora to Bled 35km (20-May-2019)

Today’s ride was short but sweet at least for the first 24km, beautiful deserted bike path through lush green countryside and then a ball breaking 150m mountain climb on a winding 2km road. Almost made it to the top but not quite, got off the bike to walk the last 500m. Then it was all down hill into Bled. Happy days. Only one event grabbed my attention during the ride was a 3km queue of trucks on the highway running parallel to my bike path, otherwise it was all about riding; a touring cyclists dream. Probably the highlight of the day was the people ( unfortunately  their names escape me and my apologies to them) that I came across   to exchange life and travel experiences and the   ride around Lake Bled. Starting with these lovely girls from Romania. Followed by this lovely couple from Camden, Australia,   Followed by this lovely couple from Kuala Lumpur Followed by this lovely couple from Ahmedabad, India ...
