Stage 3 - Seeon Seebrook to Salzburg - 60km (03-May-2019)


It’s wet and cold; at home, neither would I go for a ride nor play golf in these conditions but here, I have to soldier on. 
And soldier on, I did, on near perfect bike paths most of the way, sometime through the countryside, sometime parallel to the B roads as I made way towards Salzburg.
Not many photo taking opportunities until I got to Traunstein, where the town square was alive with market vendors and town folks. There was an orderly queue outside one of the stalls selling fresh Spargle (Asparagus), a seasonal delicacy, which I am partial to as well.

I got talking to a lady there as you do; who was kind enough to tell me more about the town’s history and why she believed it was god’s own place for her and offered to take this mug shot of mine for prosperity to remember her beloved town.

Got lost trying to get out of town; my Garmin doesn’t acknowledge road works which was blocking my route so ended up asking another young lady on how I could cross the River Traun. She recognized the flag on the back of my bike and exchanged travel experiences in fluent English; she had been to NZ and spent a week in Sydney and had come to her home town to chill and do research on where to go to do her masters in Architecture. She was leaning towards Austria. Anyway, I followed her direction to cross the river. Felt reassured, when my Garmin acknowledged route found. A few more kms out of the town, stopped to get some food into sandwich, a banana, courtesy of my host in Seebruck and me.

She kindly made me two sandwiches (yummy German bread rolls) accompanied with an apple and a banana.  The other sandwich and the apple were eaten in Salzburg. People can be so kind.
By the time I got into Salzburg, the rain was getting heavier; it took me a while to find my accommodation; Yoho Hostel. A first for me in 40 odd years but very glad I did. I couldn’t have got a warmer welcome than what I experienced. I am in a 6 person mixed dorm; haven’t met any of my roommates yet. I can’t fault this place. Met a lovely mother, Ketki and daughter, Eesha from India. Family lives in Mumbai, whilst daughter is doing a Phd in language and movement in Alzhimers or something. Lovely family.

The weather forecast for the next few days is not the best; time to give the bike (which needs a bit of love) a rest and go exploring Salzburg on foot.

Stage 22 - Schengen to Wasserbillig via Trier 70km (24-Jul-2019)

All good things come to an end (more about that later). Today's stage along the River Moselle was a late addition into our itinerary; more opportunistic than anything else. We decided to spend a couple of days in Luxembourg, 1 day visiting Luxembourg city, (which is one big construction site at the moment) which we did yesterday and 1 day to ride somewhere, which is what we did today on a seriously hot day with the temperatures hitting 38deg. Early start to catch the 9.05am bus to Schengen, where the treaty to open up the European borders was signed, yes, local buses to take bikes. Un loaded our bikes on arrival at Schengen and made our way a few 100 meters to the magnificent bike path on the Luxembourg bank of River Moselle; the other bank is Germany, to the town of Trier (Karl Marx's birthplace) in Germany. Rest day in Bruges - Damme

It's called a rest day but in reality it isn't. From time to time we take a day off the tour to discover a town and surroundings and on this occasion, that is exactly what we did. Early breakie of muesli, greek yoghurt and milk and we were good to go by 9.30am on our bikes. Making our way through the town on cobbled stone roads (not the most comfortable way to ride a bike) to the railway station, noticed how deserted the town looked compared to yesterday. Stopped a few times as you do to take these photos. Slowly made our way to the station to buy tickets for tomorrow's 4 hour train ride to Aarlon for the short 36km ride from there to Luxembourg, our final destination where we are planning to spend 3 mights before making our way by public transport to Zurich. To date, we have ridden 1,541km (including today's rides) with one short stage to go from Aarlon to Luxembourg and a planned 70km on one of our rest days in Luxembourg. Back to today, Be...

Stage 6 - Beechworth to Bright 72km (18- Mar-2021)

Another fine day’s start for the final stage of our tour. Warm but cloudy as we made our way out of Beechworth, stopping to take one final photo of the Bakery. Bakeries play a big role in the community in places like Beechworth as it has in our lives on this tour.  The cloud cover was compounded by some back burning as we traced back on the trail that brought us into Beechworth as there is only one way in and one way out. Much to our delight the tracing back was a 15.5km downhill ride until we arrived at Everton where we picked up the trail that was to bring us into Bright. It’s all part of the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail.  Unlike yesterday, today’s trail had interesting attractions in addition to the tradtional cows, bulls etc on either side of it as captured in the photos below.
