Stage 5 – St Gilgen to Gmunden 72km (07-May-2019)

What a difference a day makes? A sunny day with a blue sky for a change, but still with a chill in the air. After a hearty breakfast, made my way out of St Gilgen; uphill of course. Stopped a couple of times further up the hill to take a couple of last shots of St Gilgen.

What a day it turned out to be? Beautiful roads and cycle paths, stunning landscape of lakes and mountains even the uphill climbs were a breeze to ride. It was cycling heaven. Furthermore, met some lovely people along the way. Starting with this dude from Poland, fishing in Mondsee (Moon Lake). He hadn’t caught any yet, but assured me that he frequently goes home with a catch. After exchanging some fishing stories,

it was time to move on to the village of Mondsee on perfect cycling paths and stunning scenery; landscapes of lake and mountains, touring doesn’t get much better. (Can’t help but repeat what I said earlier.

Visiting Mondsee wasn’t in the script but what the heck I decided to take a bit of detour to check out the cute little village where I ran into this dude (from Leicester as I later learned) who approached me seeking directions to the lake. I decided to walk them to the lake as I was heading that way to be on my way.  Along the way, we exchanged our backgrounds and learnt that he was originally from Tanzania, retired with 3 married daughters and thought it was time to split when he started getting quite emotional about giving them my time to walk them to the lake He meant well, I am sure but I had to get going anyway.

The next part of the route was on a bike path parallel to the lake.

The path finally took me away from the lake where I came across a golf course with a stunning backdrop of mountains still covered in snow. Of course I stopped to check out a couple of the greens.

My Garmin played up a bit and led me astray as I got closer to Gmunden; ended up rocking into a car dealership to ask for directions to my AirBnb lodgings for the night.  She offered to call the lady host for directions after her attempt to find it in Google Map failed. After the call, I learnt that my host would come and pick form dealership in 20 minutes; so in the meantime she suggested I go and help myself to coffee and biscuits normally reserved for clients. Happy days, I didn’t need to be asked twice.  We (the bike & I) got collected and I was really glad as I was feeling the effects of today’s long ride. For dinner, because she lived remotely, she not only drove me there and back she joined me and it was nice to have some company.
It was perfect end to a fabulous day as I watched my beloved Liverpool perform a miracle to beat Barcelona 4-0 to progress to the final of the Champions league 2nd year running.

Stage 22 - Schengen to Wasserbillig via Trier 70km (24-Jul-2019)

All good things come to an end (more about that later). Today's stage along the River Moselle was a late addition into our itinerary; more opportunistic than anything else. We decided to spend a couple of days in Luxembourg, 1 day visiting Luxembourg city, (which is one big construction site at the moment) which we did yesterday and 1 day to ride somewhere, which is what we did today on a seriously hot day with the temperatures hitting 38deg. Early start to catch the 9.05am bus to Schengen, where the treaty to open up the European borders was signed, yes, local buses to take bikes. Un loaded our bikes on arrival at Schengen and made our way a few 100 meters to the magnificent bike path on the Luxembourg bank of River Moselle; the other bank is Germany, to the town of Trier (Karl Marx's birthplace) in Germany. Must admit the river appeared a tad untidy but the landscape of vineyards were breath taking. Stopped a few time to take some photos of birdlife, towns an...

Rest day in Bruges - Damme

It's called a rest day but in reality it isn't. From time to time we take a day off the tour to discover a town and surroundings and on this occasion, that is exactly what we did. Early breakie of muesli, greek yoghurt and milk and we were good to go by 9.30am on our bikes. Making our way through the town on cobbled stone roads (not the most comfortable way to ride a bike) to the railway station, noticed how deserted the town looked compared to yesterday. Stopped a few times as you do to take these photos. Slowly made our way to the station to buy tickets for tomorrow's 4 hour train ride to Aarlon for the short 36km ride from there to Luxembourg, our final destination where we are planning to spend 3 mights before making our way by public transport to Zurich. To date, we have ridden 1,541km (including today's rides) with one short stage to go from Aarlon to Luxembourg and a planned 70km on one of our rest days in Luxembourg. Back to today, Be...

Beechworth Rest Day (17-Mar-2021)

Last night, we stayed in for dinner comprising of a meat pie from the famous Beechworth Bakery and 3 different fresh salads bought from a local store and it was early to bed. After a good nights sleep, what was meant to be a rest day ended up us going for a 8.5km walk around the Beechworth Gorge on another beautiful day. Well worth it. The end of the walk led us straight to the bakery for a morning cappuccino/chai latte including the famous Beesting (pastry) shared of course.  The rest of the day was spent on much needed relaxation and a little bit of tinkering by me on the bikes in readiness for tomorrow’s last stage to Bright.
