Tank Tours

Another fine day’s start for the final stage of our tour. Warm but cloudy as we made our way out of Beechworth, stopping to take one final photo of the Bakery. Bakeries play a big role in the community in places like Beechworth as it has in our lives on this tour.  The cloud cover was compounded by some back burning as we traced back on the trail that brought us into Beechworth as there is only one way in and one way out. Much to our delight the tracing back was a 15.5km downhill ride until we arrived at Everton where we picked up the trail that was to bring us into Bright. It’s all part of the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail.  Unlike yesterday, today’s trail had interesting attractions in addition to the tradtional cows, bulls etc on either side of it as captured in the photos below. Last night, we stayed in for dinner comprising of a meat pie from the famous Beechworth Bakery and 3 different fresh salads bought from a local store and it was early to bed. After a good nights sleep, what was meant to be a rest day ended up us going for a 8.5km walk around the Beechworth Gorge on another beautiful day. Well worth it. The end of the walk led us straight to the bakery for a morning cappuccino/chai latte including the famous Beesting (pastry) shared of course.  The rest of the day was spent on much needed relaxation and a little bit of tinkering by me on the bikes in readiness for tomorrow’s last stage to Bright.

Wasn’t impressed, when my my alarm went off at 5am; had forgotten to turn it off from last week. Then struggled to sleep on and off at least until 7am when I started watching live, Liverpool beat Wolves 1-0 which made my day before it had even started.  Another glorious autumn day, warm with clear blue sky as children from the school next to our motel were making my favourite sound; happy chatter, laughter and friendly yelling at the top of their voices as only kids can do without a care in the world. Made me think of what changes that we don’t continue in the same manner as we grow up.  Today’s ride took us through Wangaratta's main street as folks were going about with what ever they were up to. This  brought us to the start (located in a local park with a huge log of wood on an old fashioned cart/wagon) of the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail, converted into a sealed bike path that was going to take us all the way to Beechworth. Sometimes I wonder what to write in the blog especially when I have little expectation of the ride but hey, you know each ride tells its story and today’s was no different. Before I go into our experience of today’s ride, some unfinished business from yesterday. Last night, for dinner Ursi had a pumpkin ravioli and I had chicken, mushroom and dried tomato fettuccine at the pub which was full to the rafters. One word to sum the eating experience “delicious. Coming back to today, again greeted by a clear sunny blue sky, typical autumn weather so we are told by the locals; for breakfast we both had rolled oats with Greek yoghurt and a little milk with a cut up apple and pear (which we bought from the local store the night before), washed down with coffee for Ursi and a chai latte for me. That is typical of our daily breakfast. For lunch, we buy slices of ham or chicken and bread rolls along the way which is also typical of our lunches in between snacks depending on our energy needs.  ...
